What a Season of Film Psychology Taught Me About Being Invisible

There is a scene in James Whale's 1931 Frankenstein that most people forget by the time the credits roll. Not the lightning. Not the lab. The moment I mean is quieter than all of that. The Monster is alone by a lake. A little girl is tossing flower petals into the water, and he sits beside her, and for one brief and impossible minute, he is just a creature who wants to be near something gentle. He is not frightening. He is not a threat. He is someone who has never known what it feels like not to be feared.

I have watched that scene many times in my life. I only understood it this year.

That is what ten episodes of a podcast about film psychology will do to you.

When I started The Silver Frame, I told anyone who asked that the show was about the psychology behind the movies we love. That was true, and it was also the safest way to describe something I didn't yet have the language for. What I was actually trying to figure out — through every guest conversation, every solo essay, every script I wrote at two in the morning — was a simpler and more embarrassing question: why do stories make us feel less alone?

The answer that kept arriving, in different voices and from different angles across all ten episodes, was the same one: because we watch films to find ourselves in them. And we create them as an offering to the world.

That sounds almost too clean. Let me complicate it.

The finding yourself part — that's the audience's half of the transaction. When we sit in the dark and watch someone onscreen grieve or fail or love or transform, our brains simulate their experience so completely that the regions processing emotional pain can't fully distinguish between what's happening to us and what's happening to them. The line between watching and feeling is far thinner than we pretend.

But the finding yourself part goes deeper than brain regions. What we are really looking for, in every film we ever loved, is permission. Permission to feel the thing we have been holding at arm's length. Permission to grieve what we lost, to name what we want, to understand the part of ourselves that embarrasses us or frightens us or refuses to be explained.

We don't watch movies to escape our emotions. We watch them to finally let ourselves have them.

The other half — the creating as an offering — that one is harder to talk about. It requires you to admit that making something is an act of vulnerability, and that vulnerability has a direction. It points outward. It says: here is what I found inside myself. I don't know if you'll recognize it. I hope you do.

Every filmmaker I spoke to this season understood that, even when they didn't use those words.

That same answer kept arriving across the season, in different voices, from different angles.

A filmmaker told me that to him, films are healing — that when you tell a story rooted in reality, you touch people's souls, and that is the job done. An actress described what her director once called going in sleeveless — walking into every scene without any covering at all. She said it plainly: you can't have the gift without the cost. The same openness that lets you step into a role is the same openness that lets old grief come up. And then there was a conversation I didn't see coming.

The conversation that shook something loose in me was not the one I expected.

I went into my episode with Ben Wilson — Episode 10, an actor based in Brisbane, Australia, early in his career, working on a psychological horror film called The Stranger at the Door that is still finding its festival audience — thinking I would ask him about craft. About preparation. About the psychology of beginning a role. I had done my research. I had good questions. I was ready to be a professional.

What happened instead was that I ended up talking to a mirror.

Ben and I share something unusual: we found our way into the same acting class, with the same director, from opposite sides of the world. That detail felt like a good opener when I introduced him. By the end of the conversation I understood it was the whole point.

Ben is living what every working actor lives: the auditions, the waiting, the juggling of day jobs and self-tapes and the particular exhaustion of loving something that doesn't yet fully love you back. He talked about it without self-pity, which made it land harder. And then, near the end, someone watching asked him what he would say to a person just starting out — no break yet, no proof it would work, just the love of it. His answer was three words.

You are enough.

He said it plainly, the way you say something you have had to learn the hard way. And somewhere in the silence after that, I stopped thinking about my questions and started thinking about my own life. About how much I have sacrificed to keep this artform a part of my reality. About the version of myself that almost let it go.

I went into that interview thinking I was the host asking about an actor's psychology. I came out understanding that I had just spent an hour articulating my own.

That is the thing about talking to someone who is living the same contradiction you are. They are not a subject. They are a witness.

This is, I realize now, exactly what the show had been arguing all season. Stories — and conversations, which are their own kind of stories — give us a frame to see ourselves. The guest doesn't teach you the lesson. The guest holds up the glass.

Here is what I know about James Whale's monster that I didn't know before this year.

The sadness in his eyes is not the sadness of a villain. It is the sadness of someone who walks into rooms and watches people decide who he is before he speaks. It is the particular grief of being misread — of having your face, your size, your difference become the only story anyone bothers to tell about you. The Monster does not want to destroy. He wants to belong. And the world keeps making those two things feel like the same impulse.

I have seen that sadness in my own reflection.

There is a moment later in the film when his bride is killed. The Monster's grief in that scene is not monstrous at all. It is the grief of someone who finally found something gentle, something that didn't flinch — and then watched it taken away. I remember my first true heartbreak when I watch that. Not as metaphor. As recognition. The specific feeling of standing in a doorway, realizing that the person on the other side has already decided something about you that you will never be able to undo.

A season of pulling apart how movies work on us psychologically taught me that this is the mechanism. Not catharsis as a theory, not mirror neurons as a fact, but this: a story reaches into the part of you that you have been protecting, and it names it before you have the chance to look away. And in that moment of being named — even by a monster, even in a film from 1931 — you are less alone than you were before.

That is what the show was about. That is what I was trying to find.

I started The Silver Frame because I believed that film was a place where the human mind revealed itself. I spent a season proving it, and somewhere along the way, the human mind it revealed most clearly was my own.

Season 2 is coming. There are questions I still haven't answered. There are guests I haven't spoken to yet who will hold up the glass and show me something I am not ready to see.

But the question I keep coming back to — the one this season left open — is this: if we watch to find ourselves, what parts of ourselves are we still avoiding on screen?
